A word from the EDC

This page provides public information from the U.S. Department of Education related to the EDFacts Initiative. In an effort to ensure that the data files remain free and available for research, we have archived this information for the general public here. Please note that the data files are presented “as is”, and EDC makes no representations and extends no warranties of any kind, express or implied.

Note about SY 2021-22

Beginning with SY 2021-22, the U.S. Department of Education transitioned to reporting the EDFacts state assessment results on a new ED Data Express (with files for download available here: ED Data Library). The EDC has compiled the assessment and participation datasets for public use into easily-downloadable data files for SY 2021-22 only, included below. Changes for SY 2021-22 compared to prior years include:

• Availability of state-level data
• Availability of science data

The EDFacts Initiative

EDFacts is a U.S. Department of Education (ED) initiative to collect, analyze, and promote the use of high-quality, pre-kindergarten through grade 12 data.

• Supports planning, policymaking, and management/budget decision-making.
• Centralizes data provided by state education agencies (SEAs).
• Collects data on district and school demographics, program participation, and performance data.

EDFacts centralizes performance data supplied by state education agencies (SEAs) with other data assets, such as financial grant information, within the Department to enable better analysis and use in policy development, planning and management. The purpose of EDFacts is to:

• Place the use of robust, timely performance data at the core of decision and policymaking in education.
• Reduce state and district data burden and streamline data practices.
• Improve state data capabilities by providing resources and technical assistance.
• Provide data for planning, policy, and management at the federal, state, and local levels.

Assessment Proficiency

SY 2020-21

ED recommends users of the SY 2020-21 Assessment Data review the data notes and state explanations to understand the full context of state, local, and school implementation of the statewide assessments. Due to the circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic, ED waived the reporting of the statewide assessments in the 2019-2020 school year and encouraged states to consider flexibilities regarding the timing, length, and type of administration of assessments in the 2020-2021 school year. Please be sure to review ED's letter regarding assessments for 2020-21. Statewide assessments were administered in most States in 2020-21 but, due to continued disruptions from the pandemic, rates of participation varied widely in schools throughout the country. Because assessment participation varied so widely, overall results for schools, districts and States may not be representative, and data for the school year 2020-2021 may not be comparable with other years.

Beginning in SY 2020-21:

• Achievement data files will be released solely in long format. In prior school years, the Achievement data files are released in wide format. See the file documentation for instructions on converting the files from long format to wide.
• Achievement results are no longer submitted to ED by performance level but by proficiency status. The Performance Level Mapping will be discontinued.

SY 2019-20

SY 2019-20 assessment reporting requirements have been suspended due to COVID-19; therefore, no Achievement data will be collected for SY 2019-20.

Between SY 2015-16 and SY 2018-19, the Performance Level Mapping tables are available as a separate Excel spreadsheet. In prior school years, the mapping tables are included as an appendix in the file documentation.
